ALKA IN SINJ
One of Venetian-Turkish wars took place in 1715.g. After a long siege Turkish hordes made the final assault on fortified city of Sinj and failed. Its is certain that the main reson for their defeat was stiff ressistance from the defenders, but dysentery which struck the Turkish camp also helped. On the battlefield remained 10.000 dead invaders, and we were left with Alka. Alka is a knight’s contest which is held in the first week of August on the main street in Sinj beneath the old fortress. Streets are filled with with people from over the countryside, as well as guests from Croatia and all over the world. Alka lasts for 3 days with 3 races are where riders in full gallop aim to hit the alka (an iron ring with four fields). The winner is the knight who managed to keep steady enough to hit the center most often.
